Music of the Heavens feat. Orchid Ensemble

Music of the Heavens is a community-based creation of a live musical and multimedia visual animated performance told through images of ancient astrological stories exploring myths and belief systems that make up our rich multicultural fabric of Canadian society. Inspired by ancient legends of the stars in Chinese, Greek, and First Nations cultures, this project features original interdisciplinary compositions of cross-cultural animated visuals and music. The team of visual artist, animators, music composers, instrumentalists, and software developers has come together to create an immersive audio-visual inter-arts performance. This is an exploration of the cultural heritages of the participating artists, and the meeting of cultures in our Canadian multi-cultural environment. Music of the Heavens is a multimedia presentation performed by projecting in real-time animated images of mythological stories set to world-class musical accompaniment – not unlike a DJ creating their own unique live music set. The animated stories are told through ancient astrological characters representing the four seasons, and highlight different cultural beliefs of many Canadian citizens. This project marries ancient myths and philosophies with our contemporary multicultural reality, new forms of visual and musical expression and digital technology. It encourages the public to look at old traditions from a fresh angle. At the same time, it promotes the awareness of both Indigenous, Asian, and Greek influences in contemporary Canadian arts and the shared heritages as well as connections between different cultures. Music of the Heavens multimedia performance will take place at the the Rotary Centre for the Arts Mary Irwin Theatre in Kelowna on November 30, 2017. Tickets: $20 Adult, $10 Student, $50 Family Rate (2 Adults & 2 Students)

Digging Roots

Presented by the Rotary Centre for the Arts Sat. October 7, 2017, 7:30 – 9:15 pm For the last few years the JUNO winning genre-blurring five-piece indie band from Toronto have been busy touring North America and Europe. For seven months in 2016 they performed at festivals and listening rooms throughout Canada and Australia. Musical partners Raven and ShoShona are the creative team and inspiration behind Digging Roots. In creating music they utilize the traditional Anishinabek Song Lines composition technique of tracing melody and rhythm from the contours of the land. This traditional method of creating songs is paired with modern Eurocentric techniques of composition. Their latest JUNO nominated album ‘For The Light’ brings more global-blues infused songs and audience ‘round dances’ to their national and international tours. For the last year, Digging Roots have been in studios from Australia to Canada producing their latest album ‘The Hunter & The Healer’ and they have released a new single and video for their song ‘AK-47’ which explores the concept of love as a weapon in reclaiming our humanity. Digging Roots is a musical group that balances femininity and masculinity with Indigenous tradition and modern aesthetics. Their goal is to engage wider audiences to promote their Anishinabek music and cultural ideals. Digging Roots were awarded the first Cobalt Prize for Contemporary Blues Composition at the Maple Blues Awards (JAN 2015). The creator and benefactor of the award, musician Paul Reddick, presented Digging Roots the grand prize for their song “Hwy 17”. Leela Gilday in Concert

A passionate singer/songwriter and soulful performer, Leela Gilday has a voice that comes straight from the heart. Confessing her stories to her audiences with a gutsy voice and open stage presence, Gilday weaves her experiences as a northerner, a member of the Dene nation, and a traveler into a beautiful world that transports the listener. With four full-length recordings and a long touring history, Gilday has numerous awards to her credit, including a Juno, two Western Canadian Music Awards, Aboriginal Female Entertainer of the Year to name a few. Above all, she seeks connection with her audiences through music, and with each record brings more unique stories to the world. Whether it’s an anthem for the oppressed, or an upbeat song about mortality, she infuses her songs with a sense of humour as well as a sense of social justice, and an ironic appreciation of human folly. From her home in Yellowknife NT, touring has taken Leela from Tokyo to Toronto and from New Zealand to Greenland, with an overwhelming response to the strength of her performances in concert halls, festivals or on radio and television. Without a doubt, Leela has earned an important place in the Aboriginal music scene and as part of the musical fabric of Canada. Sarah Hagen

Sarah Hagen performs Rachmaninoff's complete Preludes Opus 32. Rarely performed as a complete set, these thirteen pieces take the listener on intensively beautiful musical journey. They are fantastically dramatic, wildly virtuosic, and heart-wrenchingly profound. From a review after Sarah's performance of this set in Charlottetown (Later named by the The Guardian (Charlottetown) as Best Classical Performance 2014): “…it was immediately apparent that this would be a piano concert beyond the norm.“ “…the level of passion that Hagen possesses — when it comes to experiencing, interpreting and expressing art — is something quite extraordinary.” “Hagen is one of the most expressive piano players that I have ever seen perform…” — The Guardian (Charlottetown) March 2014 Awarded as the BC Touring Council's 2015 Touring Artist of the year, Canadian pianist Sarah Hagen has been heard in concert halls and on the airwaves throughout North America and Europe. A visionary and an idealist, Sarah shares the stage with artists from around the world and is Artistic Director for Pro'ject Sound, a performance project involving live piano with large-scale projected images. Her debut solo album, Glass House Dancing, was nominated for Classical Recording of the Year at the 2009 Western Canadian Music Awards. Spook & Spin Halloween Party

Celebrate the spookiest night of the year with Delhi 2 Dublin and Kinshira Performance Group! Delhi 2 Dublin was a happy accident born out of Vancouver’s Celtic Fest in 2006. Their sound started as an electronic fusion between bhangra beats and Celtic fiddle and has since grown into anything from dub reggae to breakbeats to just straight up happy dance music. Founded by Tarun Nayar (of Beats Without Borders cred), Sanjay Seran (at the time hailing from live bhangra act Signia), and Ravi Binning (a professionally trained bhangra dancer and dhol player), D2D had something people wanted. Word spread about their ridiculously energetic live show, and these road-warriors have been touring constantly: mesmerizing crowds at many of the top festivals across Canada and the US, blowing people away in the UK, Australia, Germany and Malaysia as well as performing to awe-filled audiences in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Dubai. The band’s new release of “We’re All Desi” looks to be their strongest album yet. Eschewing the sterility of writing songs in the studio, and embracing the musicianship of new members James Wallace (guitar) and Serena Eades (fiddle), the band has based their new material entirely on jam sessions. Heavily influenced by their favourite Bollywood records from the 70s, their love for funk music, and produced by Nick Middleton (of The Funk Hunters), the results combine the high energy of their signature live shows with a newfound studio polish. Described by one magazine as the “United Nations of rock ‘n’ roll”, the last 9 years of touring have seen Delhi 2 Dublin become one of Canada’s most buzzed-about bands – and this was not just a happy accident. Kinshira Performance Group ~ Howl ~ Shape shifters, creatures of the damned, demon wolves. Two of these monsters roam the outskirts of the black forest. Too many have been lost to their rage & inability to control their curse. A bounty has been placed on both their heads. Join a gang of crypto-steampunk-monster hunters as they carry out their tactics to confirm who is human and who is cursed. All will be revealed as the bad moon rises. $30/Adult, $25/Member or for Groups of 6+ (Must be 19+) To purchase tickets call the Rotary Centre for the Arts box office at 250-717-5304.

Sugar Skull Strut

Dancers of Damelahamid

Luu hlotitxw: Spirit Transforming - “There is a process in which one moves within to come out again as another, it is a process of re-birth. It is only when in these in-between places that we have the ability to redefine ourselves and move forward...this describes the process of Luu hlotitxw”. Luu hlotitxw roughly translated as Spirit Transforming describes the ‘in-between places’, and forms the premise and cultural foundation of the artistic processes of this dance piece. Aboriginal dance practices will not transform set boundaries unless Aboriginal peoples are in the places of transformation to redefine ourselves. The dance work Spirit Transforming is an exploration, and celebration of the magnificence of the essence of who Aboriginal peoples are and what that transcends. Deeply rooted in the timeless dance traditions of the Gitxsan, this work shares a very personal journey of re-birth, and brings forth the rich expression of coastal dance, transformed. Tickets can be purchased at http://ow.ly/S3011 - $25 Adult/$15 Senior or Student/$20 each for groups of 6+.

Arbolé - Fiona Malena Flamenco with Special Guest Karen Lugo

In this powerful new work from Fiona Malena Flamenco, live music, song and dance unite, transporting audiences to a world of Flamenco sound and imagery and cutting edge expression. Canadian dancer/Artistic Director Fiona Malena tours internationally and performed last year across Canada to sold-out audiences. In this production she collaborates with dance sensation Karen Lugo who has been described as a “triumph of style and invention” (The Washington Post).  Featuring some of Spain’s top innovative Flamenco performers, guitarist Victor Márquez “El Tomate” and singer Juan Debel, this production integrates imaginative artwork by Spanish based artist Rinat Izhak and stunning costume design by Isabel de la Rosa.  Arbolé is centered on a fantastical forest, exploring the moment where imaginary and real worlds intermingle. The inspiration behind the production took root earlier this year during Fiona Malena’s travels to Southern Spain, where she visited the forest of the renown Arts Centre, ValdelArte. Artist Rinat Izhak’s art project “La Raíz del Uno” is imbedded deep in the Spanish forest, a space of trees and latticework roots. From this source of inspiration the arboreal world emerges, filling the stage with movement, music and unforgettable imagery. ME SO YOU SO ME

Fueled by Japanese historical and pop culture, classical Indian tabla rhythms and cartoons, this work reveals projections of the self, through the eyes of a partner, through the dynamic of a couple and through the genre-defying music of experimental Japanese percussionist Asa Chang. Their combined study and creation experiences have taken place in Brazil, Italy, The Czech Republic, The Netherlands and across Canada with significant residencies in New York, Seoul and Antwerp.
