Junction Literacy Centre on Our Okanagan:

 

The Junction Literacy Centre is the hub for information about literacy programs and services in the North Okanagan. 

 

The centre also hosts or sponsors several literacy programs:

  • One to One Children's Literacy Program for children in grades 1 to 6
  • Skills Boost! After school tutoring for disadvantaged children and youth
  • Summer Reading Camps

 

Family Literacy Programs:

  • Books for Babies
  • Workshops for parents with children in grade 1 (Come Read with Me and You Can Count on Me)

 

Plain Language Workshops and editing services are available throughout the year.

 

Special Events

  • Family Literacy Day January 27th of each year - we challenge the community to "Fill a Honda Fit" with gently used and new children's books.
  • Adult Spelling Bee Challenge - our biggest fundraiser of the year

What We Offer

Plain Language Workshops and Editing services

Learn how to prepare or edit your documents using the principles of plain language. 

Three hour workshops are scheduled throughout the year. 

Learn how to:

  • Plan
  • Write
  • Design, and
  • Edit your brochures, newsletters, reports, emails, internal memos, advertising and more. 

Documents that are written clearly are easily understood by all readers and save you time and money.

Resource Centre for all literacy services in the region

We maintain an up-to-date list of all literacy and learning programs in the North Okanagan region.  If you are looking for help with reading, writing or math, call us and we will let you know what your options are.  Information is also available on our website.  Click on the "Regional Literacy Service Providers" tab at the top of the screen.

Read with Children

Volunteers are needed to read one-on-one with children in grades 1 to 6. The committment is one and a half hours, one morning or afternoon a week for 12 weeks from Oct to January and/or February to May. Detailed training and school orientation are provided. Tutors are needed at all elementary schools in the Vernon region including the Okanagan Indian Band School, Vernon Christian and St James Catholic schools. If you are fluent in French, we also run a program at our French immersion school. For more information and to view a video, check our website.
