What We Offer

Active Release Techniques®Active Release Techniques®

Active Release Technique® (ART) is a patented, state of the art soft tissue technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Every ART session is actually a combination of examination and treatment. The ART provider uses his or her hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves, and the abnormal tissues are then treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements.

Common conditions treated include:

  • Muscle strains
  • Headaches
  • Neck pain
  • Back pain
  • Hip pain
  • Sciatica
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Tennis Elbow
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Iliotibial Band (ITB) Syndrome
  • Shin Splints
  • Plantar Fasciitis

Athletic Movement AssessmentAthletic Movement Assessment

Athletic Movement Assessment (AMA) is a protocol consisting of specific and relevant exercise movement screens that simulate various athletic motions. AMA’s sport-specific assessments have been developed and adopted through a thorough synthesis of the scientific literature (sports sciences, biomechanical, and biological science literature), and are used to guide both clinical and sport performance strategies. The assessments are designed to identify potential injury risks, performance directives, and strength and conditioning priorities. They help to identify muscle weakness, flexibility/mobility issues, joint problems, and aberrant movement patterns.

The goal of AMA is to identify, categorize and quantify movement behaviours that are both optimal and suboptimal for athletic performance. All the information gathered is then thoroughly analyzed and communicated to the athlete. This provides athletes, of all ages and levels, with the latest sport-specific assessments in order to facilitate injury risk management and help maximize athletic potential. The data collected and feedback from AMA also provides a common language for athletes, coaches, trainers, and therapists to employ, establishing continuity of care and athlete-specific development.

Chiropractic

Chiropractic is a non-invasive, hands-on health care discipline that focuses on the neuromusculoskeletal system. Chiropractors practice a manual approach, providing diagnosis, treatment and preventative care for disorders related to the spine, nervous system, muscles and joints of the body.

After a thorough history and physical examination, a unique treatment plan is developed for each individual. Treatments can include chiropractic adjustments, joint mobilizations, soft-tissue therapy, electromodalities, rehabilitative exercise, supportive devices, as well as dietary and lifestyle counseling.

Chiropractic & Pediatric and ChildrenChiropractic & Pediatric and Children

The first stresses on a baby spine, cranial bones and nervous system can occur during childbirth and even during pregnancy. Chiropractic can limit the impact of these stresses and allow the newborn to better adapt to its new environment. Although usually asymptomatic, these stresses related to the birth process cause muscle, joint and nerve tension in the newborn. Chiropractic adjustments are delicate manual techniques that allow us to correct these tensions. Newborns can safely receive chiropractic care immediately following birth, and these techniques are so gentle that the baby often sleeps through it.

Common conditions treated in pediatrics include:

  • Restricted head or neck movement
  • Disturbed sleep patterns
  • Trouble latching or nursing
  • Excessive regurgitation
  • Acid reflux
  • Earaches
  • Colic
  • Back pain
  • Irritability
  • Constipation

Children deal with many of the same problems as adults such as poor posture, trauma, stress, and sports injuries. Until late adolescence, their skeletal structures are in a continual state of growth, and can be greatly influenced by the stresses placed on them. Demands at home, school and through sport activities can result in muscular imbalances, muscle strains or tension, as well as irritation of the joints of the spine and rib cage. Besides sports injuries, one of the most common causes of back pain in children is carrying a heavy or non-fitted backpack.

Common conditions treated in children include:

  • Postural problems
  • Headaches
  • Back and neck pain
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Earaches
  • Growing pains
  • Concentration and learning difficulties
  • Sports injuries

Chiropractic & Pregnancy

Chiropractic care is an integral part in the prenatal and postpartum stages of pregnancy. As the pregnancy progresses, strain of the pelvic and spinal structures combined with changes in your gait and center of gravity can set the stage for back and neck pain. Additionally, as labour approaches, your body secretes a hormone called relaxin, which causes ligament laxity. This may exaggerate the effects of an existing spinal or pelvic problem; causing further joint stress, pain, and discomfort. Chiropractic care during pregnancy has been shown to alleviate pain and discomfort by maintaining alignment of the spine and pelvis, optimizing baby positioning and minimizing complications during birth.

According to recent studies, chiropractic care may result in an easier pregnancy by increasing comfort during the second and third trimester, reducing labour times, and decreasing the potential of back labour. Chiropractic care has also been shown to reduce the likelihood of postpartum depression and help control symptoms of nausea and acid reflux.

Benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy:

  • Maintain a healthier pregnancy
  • Relief of back, neck, and joint pain
  • Relief of pelvic and pubic pain
  • Relief of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Minimize symptoms of nausea
  • Minimize the symptoms of acid reflux
  • Correct pelvic alignment for breech presentation
  • Reduce the possibility of post partum depression
  • Reduction in labour and delivery time
  • Reduce the likelihood of cesarean delivery

The Webster Technique

The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic assessment and adjustment to the pelvis and sacrum that enables chiropractors to establish balance in the pregnant woman’s pelvis and reduce undue stress on her uterus and supporting ligaments. This balanced state in the pelvis has been clinically shown to allow for optimal fetal positioning. This technique has a high success rate in allowing babies in the breech position to go into the normal head down or vertex position.

Dr. McPherson is certified in the Webster technique and is currently working towards the Pediatric Certification of Proficiency through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association.

Custom OrthoticsCustom Orthotics

A custom orthotic is a device designed to align the foot and ankle into the most anatomically efficient position. They look like insoles, but are biomechanical medical appliances that are custom made to correct your specific foot imbalance. Custom orthotics work on your feet much like glasses work on your eyes; they reduce stress and strain on your body by bringing your feet back into proper alignment. The plastic body of the custom orthotic helps to re-align the foot by redirecting and reducing certain motion that takes place during the gait cycle. Custom orthotics fit into your shoes as comfortably as an insole, and they have the advantage of having been made from precise imprints of your feet.

We provide custom orthotics for all kinds of footwear including work boots, dress shoes, athletic shoes, skates and cleats, and also provide specialized orthotics for people with diabetes and arthritis. Before prescribing orthotics, we conduct a thorough history and physical examination, which includes a biomechanical gait analysis. If you are a candidate for orthotics, we ensure that we find the right pair for your needs.

Common conditions include:

  • Plantar Fasciitis/Fasciosis
  • Shin Splints
  • Overpronation
  • Bunions
  • Hallux Rigidus
  • Low back pain
  • Hip pain
  • Knee pain
  • Heel pain
  • Foot pain

Our programs are designed to help treat and prevent common musculoskeletal injuries, to improve joint integrity and stability, and to facilitate optimal function and sport performance.

Graston Technique®Graston Technique®

Graston Technique® is an innovative, patented form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that enables clinicians to effectively break down scar tissue and fascial restrictions. The technique utilizes specially designed stainless steel instruments to specifically detect and effectively treat areas exhibiting soft tissue fibrosis or chronic inflammation.

Common conditions treated include:

  • Achilles Tendinitis
  • Ankle sprains
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Iliotibial Band (ITB) Syndrome
  • Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS)
  • Patellar Tendinitis
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Adhesive Capsulitis
  • Neck pain
  • Back pain
  • Hip pain
  • Scar pain
  • Muscle strains

Kinesio Taping®Kinesio Taping®

The Kinesio Taping® Method is a rehabilitative taping technique that is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process, while providing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the body’s range of motion. Several studies have supported the efficacy of the Kinesio Taping® technique for addressing acute injury inflammation, reducing pain, promoting a faster return to activity, enhancing proprioceptive training, and enhancing neurological function post-injury. The built-in stretch of the tape can help stabilize injured muscles and support fatigued, weakened and/or strained muscles. Taping applications can also be used to lift the skin to increase the space between the skin and underlying muscle. This reduces localized pressure in the affected area and helps to promote circulation and lymphatic drainage.
