Volunteer Leaders - Walk for Memories

The Alzheimer Society of B.C. provides a province-wide network of support, education, and information resources for families impacted by dementia. The Society is a non-profit organization that also advocates for better dementia health care and raises money to fund research. Learn more at www.alzheimerbc.org. For nearly 10 years, residents in Kelowna, B.C. have joined together on the last Sunday in January to raise money and awareness for families impacted by dementia at the Investors Group Walk for Memories. Now, the Alzheimer Society of B.C. is calling for volunteer leaders to help plan and coordinate this cherished community event in 2013. “The Investors Group Walk for Memories has long been a grassroots, community-driven event,” says Jean Blake, CEO of the Alzheimer Society of B.C. “Volunteer committees in communities around the province bring life and heart to the event, which goes a long way in aiding the fight against Alzheimer’s disease while honouring local families on the dementia journey.” Participants join the Walk to celebrate the life of someone in their life who has been impacted by Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia, and to raise money for Alzheimer Society of B.C. programs and services in their community that can help. Money raised is also invested into research for a cure. In 2012, the Kelowna Walk raised an impressive $28,000 for the cause. Volunteers take the lead in their community by organizing the logistics of the Walk, as well as promoting the event locally and recruiting participant teams. The Alzheimer Society of B.C. provides training and on-going support. For more information about volunteer positions with the 2013 Investors Group Walk for Memories, please contact Janis McKell at JMcKell@alzheimerbc.org or 1-800-667-3742.
